Human Resources Department

Human Resources

The shíshálh First Nation Band created the position of Director of Human Resources in the summer of 2007. Before that, human resources (HR) issues were managed directly by the CAO and department heads. This meant that they were taking valuable time away from their areas of expertise to deal with HR matters. The creation of the human resources position allows the other department heads to focus on their programs, and helps to ensure a consistent approach to human resources issues across the organization. It also provides a single point of responsibility for planning, for development of new policies, and for human resources projects.

Although Human Resources focuses mainly on supporting the CAO, department heads, and Chief and Council, support and advice is provided to anyone who works for the Band, as well as to people who don't work for the Band but who want to. HR provides support on policies, human resources legal issues, human resources processes, payroll administration, payroll budgeting, strategic planning, dealing with staff issues and difficult situations, and recruiting and staffing.

Employment at the shíshálh First Nation is generally covered by the Canada Labour Code, as well as our own policies, WorksafeBC (WCB) regulations, and the rules of our benefits plans. Employment with the Band's businesses is covered by the B.C Employment Standards Act rather than the Canada Labour Code.
