Sechelt Indian Government DistrictPurposes:1.To levy property taxes annually on all residents and businesses. 2.To receive provincial grants applicable to a BC municipality. 3.To purchase services such as fire protection, road maintenance, street lighting, sewer collection and disposal, garbage collection, recycling. 4.To collect and remit provincial school taxes, regional district taxes, regional hospital taxes and BC Assessment Authority taxes 5.To fund the shíshálh Nation as required. 6.To participate in the operation of the SCRD via appointing a Band Council member to the SCRD board. In order to perform these duties the District must develop annual budget and tax rates.The District has also adopted a number of regulatory laws over the years such as: dog control, noise law, traffic law, business licences, sewer regulation etc. The SIGD is, in essence, the local government. |
